How to submit sitemap in google search console

What is Xml sitemap ?

Sitemap are an easy way for Google search console formally called webmasters to inform search engines about pages, post and categories on their sites that are available for crawling. In its simplest form, a Sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL (when it was last updated, how often it usually changes, and how important it is, relative to other URLs in the site) so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site.

Web crawlers usually discover pages from links within the site and from other sites. Sitemaps supplement this data to allow crawlers that support Sitemap to pick up all URLs in the Sitemap and learn about those URLs using the associated metadata. Using the Sitemap protocol does not guarantee that web pages are included in search engines, but provides hints for web crawlers to do a better job of crawling your site.

Sitemap 0.90 is offered under the terms of the Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons License and has wide adoption, including support from Google, Yahoo!, and Microsoft.

Follow the below steps in your wordpress to submit your sitemaps in not less than 10 minutes.

1. Create Your WordPress Xml Sitemap with a plugin

I use and love Yoast’s WordPress SEO plugin. It allows me to get all of my on page SEO in order and also has built in sitemaps functionality.

If you are using another wordpress plugin for sitemap functionality, that is fine too. Just skip down to the submission process

2. Generate Your Xml Sitemap the Plugin

Yoast sitemap

In the XML Sitemaps panel in Yoast, you will see this screen.

Check the box to enable sitemaps functionality, exclude any custom post types, tag pages, category pages, that you don’t want to submit to google. I don’t generate (or use) tags on inbound now so I have that checked to exlcude.

I’m also excluding a custom post type for Shortcodes that I use, because the content is gibberish to search engines and you don’t want to muck up google’s index.

3. Grab Your Sitemap Links!

Head over to your new sitemaps index page.

4. Look a sitemap

This is the example of what my sitemaps index looks like on Inbound Now. The next step will be taking these links and logging into google’s webmaster tools.
